Non-political.
spent the day at the NARBC in Chantilly (http://narbc.com/htm2006/va_index.htm). Very nice time. Many snakes in attendance, whole lot of breeders seem to be concentrating on snakes these days. The usual selection of pretty chameleons and leopard geckos. Very few day gekkos, as usual. More turtles than I'm used to seeing, a couple of sulcatas, but several red-foots.
Went to a couple of the talks, Nigel Marven's on the making of his dinosaur fictional series: rather disappointing, actually, it concentrated much on the "how we did this", and not much on the dinosaurs. Also went to wildlife artist Tell Hick's talk on herping in the american southwest. That was a great talk. Finally met face-to-face with a friend of mine I've know on-line for a few years: she's heavily involved with the International Reptile Conservation Fund. Also ran into my friend Nancy B, whose iguana recently died: she's looking for her next lizard.
Which brings me back to the animals. One vendor had some rhinocerous iguanas, and also some cuban iguanas. Oh, lots of hognose snakes this time around, including a south american type I've never seen before. Beautiful specimens, mostly black & red bars with some white stripe highlights.
I remembered to take the digital camera with me, so I got lots of pics, some of which actually turned out well. When I can get them up on photobucket, I'll post them.

First, political stuff gakked from vvalkyri over on LJ:
Last summer's proposed rules change that would redefine birth control as abortion. This would "allow" an organization receiving HHS funding to also refuse to provide birth control, regardless of the patient's other (lack of) care options? The public outcry in the form of 200,000 people sending in negative comments stopped this.
Then the Bush Administration lied again in the form of making a promise to not make any further reg changes after Nov 1.
The incoming administration is, of course, spending time reviewing all the old adm's executive orders so as to reverse what needs reversed. But still. From Planned Parenthood: ( Text of the Planned Parenthood e-mail. Yes, you should read this )
And now, ( the page for the new e-mail commentary campaign )

90 years. I find myself mainly thinking about the timing of wars. Between the end of the Napoleonic wars and the beginning of World War I, there were slightly over 99 years; in the interim, both Europe and North America had seen a host of 'minor' wars. But only 21 years (slightly less, actually) between the First & Second World Wars. But then, another long gap between 'major' wars: 46 years between the end of World War 2, and the beginning of the Gulf War, involving most of the technologically developed nations of the world. Which of course, leads to the whole question of sociological development vs. technological development.

There's a NARBC ( http://www.narbc.com/htm2006/va_index.htm ) coming up on the weekend I'd like ot get to. Also, Saturday is a gaming evening. What I'd like to do is scam a ride from the nearest metrorail station to the show, and then from Chantilly (Virginia) back to here for gaming. Anyone on my f-list interested in heading to the show, hanging around, and then back up here?
